Know Your Target Market to Increase Website VisitorsLearning how to increase website traffic is one of the most important ways for you to succeed in your web business. In order to help increase website traffic, you need to know your customer – who you are selling to – in other words, your target market. If you understand who your target market is, you can improve your selling techniques and direct your ad campaigns directly towards those specific people.
You may think you know who your target market is because your website is about what interests you. You may think that you are the ideal customer to buy something from your website. This, however, may only be partly true. You may indeed be the ideal prospect, but there may be other customers whom you may be missing.
For example, suppose your website is about dogs in general, so you sell books relating to dogs on your website. You love dogs so you think you know what books your customers will like too. But are you missing another segment of your market that you could be making money on? Suppose you are aiming to sell dog training books. You think your target market is for dog owners who want to train their dogs. Indeed, a large part of your market may be just that so you target your ad campaign for dog lovers. ‘Dog lovers’ may be your number one keyword in all your ads. But what about people who have a cat, but are wanting get a dog as well? Or what about people wanting to train a guard dog? Or what about people who want to train their dog to get along with other pets in the household, like birds? Or what about a husband who isn’t a dog lover, but who wants to train his wife’s dog? Or what about a mother who is buying the book for her young son to train their new puppy?
What you need to do is do a little research and go beyond who you think your target market is and aim part of your ad campaigns towards those individuals. That market outside of your initial target area may be bigger than you think—and may allow you to access a larger market and enable you to increase targeted website traffic to your website.
In order to find other types of customers, you can go to Google or Yahoo, or access another similar program, that will give you data on how many hits each keyword or keyword phrase gets. Put in every keyword or phrase you can think of relating to your topic. Then go to the suggestions that Google (or whomever) gives you to get new ideas that you may not have thought of before.
Also, look within your own marketing materials and products to find other ideas on who may want or need your products. Searching for new products that you can sell on your website can lead you to a new and bigger market for your goods.
Also look at demographics. This may seem like a big task, but it also may pay off in the end with increasing website traffic. How many dog owners are there? What ages are the majority of them? What is their salary range? What area of the country do most dog owners live in? Do they own multiple dogs or pets? All of this information can tell you how to pinpoint your target market and how your ad campaign should look and feel to be most effective for those people.
Knowing who your real target market is can help you greatly increase traffic to your website. Using demographics and aiming your ad campaign towards the right market is one of the best ways of getting targeted website visitors to your website.
